About Cora Tyson and Barbara Vickers
Mrs. Tyson and Mrs. Vickers, who will each turn 103 this spring, were stalwarts of local activism. Mrs. Tyson hosted Dr. King for a night in 1964 during a time of intense violence in the city. Mrs. Vickers, a neighbor of Dr. Hayling’s, participated in local protests and ultimately led the push for a “Foot Soldiers Monument” in the Plaza, honoring the courageous but little-known people who fueled the movement.
