About Irvin Cheney

A white pastor of a Congregational church in nearby Daytona Beach, Cheney was asked to do “a little spy work” at the Klan rally in St. Augustine in September 1963. His courageous activism helped to save Dr. Hayling and three other Black men who had been captured outside the rally and sustained grievous—and almost fatal—beatings.
