Extraordinary Stories. Little-Known Characters. Uncomfortable Truths.
About John Herbers and Stetson Kennedy
Journalism requires courage, and Herbers (of The New York Times) and Kennedy (of The Pittsburgh Courier) displayed it in abundance by telling hard truths in St. Augustine. Herbers and his family were chased out of the city by gun-toting segregationists, while Kennedy (who had fled the country for a decade after infiltrating and writing about the Klan) gained the trust of Dr. Hayling and delivered vivid accounts of the movement.
