About The St Augustine Four
Four teenagers in the NAACP Youth Council—Audrey Nell Edwards, JoeAnn Anderson, Willie Carl Singleton, and Samuel White—spent six months in jail and sadistic reform schools for a nonviolent sit-in they conducted at the local Woolworth’s in July 1963. Collectively known as the St. Augustine 4, their courage helped to inspire and sustain the local movement.
